How Physical Therapy Knee Exercises May Help You

One of the most common reasons to seek physical rehabilitation is problems with the knee. Physical therapy knee exercises can be very helpful for many patients dealing with common yet uncomfortable knee related problems. There are various things that can go wrong with the joints of the knee, including acute injury due to exercise or sports, knee injury that worsens over time due to repetitive motion, complications due to arthritis and more. The very first step before considering physical therapy is to have your condition evaluated.

Your physician can refer you to a physical therapist or have imaging tests scheduled to determine what is happening with your knee. Once the problem has been diagnosed a treatment regimen can begin. Some insurance companies do require a referral from your primary care physician before they will cover the cost of physical therapy, so make sure to ask. Once you have been referred to the right physical therapist he or she will examine your knee and come up with a detailed rehabilitation plan.

The main functions of any knee rehabilitation plan are to restore function and mobility while decreasing pain and discomfort. This is often achieved by manual manipulation and certain exercises. While the exact exercises you'll be doing depends upon your specific problem and what your PT thinks will be of the most help, common exercises used for strengthening knees include squats, toe raises, leg lifts, rowing machine sessions and low impact rowing machine and/or elliptical machine workouts. The key is to flex and strengthen the knee without putting undue strain on the affected area.

Thanks to physical therapy knee exercises and other strategies, surgery is being used less often these days. Physical therapists and even doctors are choosing non-invasive ways of treating issues with the knees whenever possible. If you do end up requiring knee surgery for your condition it is highly likely you will work with a PT after the surgical procedure. The goal of a PT is the same as yours, to regain normal functioning and relieve pain. In addition to knee exercises, you may also be directed to try other therapies like heat, ice, ultrasound and even hydrotherapy which is done in a tub or pool.
